"Dr. Zoidberg - RIP Oppo" (thetomselleck)

Here’s a cutie on BaT, and something I never knew was a thing: a 2001 SLK “6+6" let’s call it. It has an M112 V6 and a 6-speed manual.
What’s the word on the street on these little things and this powertrain?
AMGTech? fintail? RPM? That guy that owns the broken S-class ? Bueller? Bueller?

The one I drove wasn’t a manual, and I don’t believe it was the V6, but it was an awful place to be. The interior is the biggest lie of luxury with how poorly everything fits, and creaks, and is just chintzy feeling. And I feel that overall sensation was shared with the chassis as a whole. And that was back in 2007. Is this example’s particular powertrain setup enough to overcome that? Maybe. But it’s a steep hill in my mind.

My step mom had one. Not manual but trip tronic. Fun little ride. I remember putting the beans to it heading North on I5 and bouncing between the ruts in the road but not even feeling like I was doing 80. I have heard that MB manuals are vague and lifeless.

Cheap plasticky interior, cramped, slow, and a numb unrewarding manual. The SLK is worse in every way than the Boxster and Z3 it attempted to compete with. For the same money you could get a newer Miata that is objectively better.

I have heard similar things. I briefly window shopped those little hatchback things, the C230 Kompressor “coupe” things? Apparently they’re not good too, nor the was manual.

Wasn’t this badge engineered into a Chrysler crossfire?

I was watching Ronin (again) since it is free on Youtube and was strongly drawn to the Audi S8. My wife (who was in the next room but refused to watch it yet again) said the movie is 22 years old. So of course I start checking CL. You can find okayish examples for $6k. After some basic research t hey are called D2's even though it is gen 1 bc it is on VWs D2 platform shared with the A8 that is an all all aluminum monocoque chassis. I think it also had aluminum body panels. I assume this means no major rust issues but I wonder if the salt just eats through and corrodes the aluminum . Maybe it was hard coat anodized.
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

Fantastically tough if uninspiring engine , meh shifter, floppy chassis wrapped in plastic, just in time to need all the top hydraulics gone through.

Perfect summation, minus the lack of mention regarding the steering which has about as much feel as Cruisin' USA in 1996.

You don't want one of these. The only way these even come close to being desirable is if it's an SLK32. But then you still got a cheap feeling interior, vague gearbox steering, and potential roof issues to deal with.

Any sub $5k sports car is great. This low mile example won’t be that so nah.
TBH I still think a SRT6 Crossfire would be a buy. They’re not the best handling but at least supercharged its kind of fast. Those weird looks will be worth something, some day.

Absolutely 0 steering feel in these, never driven a manual though. I’m not sure what the owner base looks like these days, but when they were new, 1% were driven by grandmas and the other 99% by absolute phonies.
I’d imagine that the grandmas still have theirs. The others probably have Ghiblis now.

I felt that the wet noodle steering was covered under floppy chassis, but it is bad enough to warrant separate mention ;)

I would think so too, but people still ask me all the time. And they still don’t get just how bad it is until they drive one , so I’ll mention it every time.

Engine is fine. All of the other things that make small light RWD verts sporty are things these don’t have. Too complicated, too heavy, too boring, too soft, too unresponsive, etc. etc. It’s a Miata for octogenarian doctors’ septuagenarian wives.
